1. Check the area for safety

2. Make contact with the victim (tap on their chest or shoulder; see if they respond)

3. Call 911 and if possible, send someone to get help and get an AED (defibrillator)

4. Assess for pulse and breathing (feel the side of the neck to try to find a pulse for about 10 seconds, and listen for breathing or gasping)

5. If there is no pulse or the patient is only gasping, start CPR (interlock your hands together in the center of the victim’s chest, lock your elbows, push HARD down at least 2 inches and push FAST at a rate of 110-120 beats per min)

6. Continue CPR until help or an AED arrive.
