APPLYING FOR TRAINING IN PEDIATRIC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY

Statement from the PACES Training Program Directors (PACES-TPD) Committee

The PACES Training Program Directors (PACES-TPDs) are excited to train the next generation of pediatric electrophysiologists! Although pediatric electrophysiology is not an ACGME-accredited training pathway, a national standard for training exists, and completion of an advanced fellowship is widely accepted as the training standard for new pediatric electrophysiologists. Because Pediatric EP is not ACGME-accredited, training programs may not have the funding to offer a fellowship position every year, and most programs can offer only one position per year. There is currently no centralized application or "match" program for pediatric electrophysiology fellowship.

To address these challenges, the PACES-TPDs have collaborated to create as much consistency as possible in the application process, timeline, and offer notification date, while accounting for differences among individual programs. The PACES-TPDs have developed a Common Offer Notification Agreement to give applicants the opportunity to interview at multiple training programs with a standardized timeline for offers and acceptances of fellowship positions.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

General Application Timeline

There is no central application or "match" program for Pediatric EP
Offers for pediatric EP fellowship positions will be made only on the Common Offer Notification Date unless otherwise specified by the rules of the Common Offer Notification Agreement.
Each individual program will have their own timeline for accepting applications and scheduling interviews.
However, in general, most programs follow this general timeline:

In the calendar year prior to the anticipated EP fellowship training year start:

- January/February - Programs start accepting applications
- April/May - Many programs hold Informal or formal meetings with interested applicants at HRS Scientific Sessions
- May/June -Interviews begin
- July/August - Programs stop accepting applications and Interviews finished
- September - Applicants are offered fellowship positions on the Common Offer Notification Date. Acceptances of any offers must be made within 24 hours.

Common Offer Notification Date/Time for EP fellowship positions for AY 2027-28:

Wednesday September 9, 2026 at 6am Pacific/9am Eastern US Time

STEP 1: Join PACES and create a PACES login account

STEP 2: Fill out the PACES-TPD applicant registration form

Fill out this PACES-TPD applicant information form: APPLICANT REGISTRATION FORM
Important: This applicant information form is NOT an application submission for fellowship. This is to provide information on the applicant pool to the PACES-TPDs and for further communications during the application process.
Once you submit this form, an email conformation will be sent to you with a PACES-TPD common initial application form as a PDF attachment.
Not all programs will accept this application, but a large majority will. Some programs may have their own specific application forms that they require. You must check with each individual program to see if they will accept it.
Each program has their own required documents for applying. You will need contact individual programs to see what their specific requirements are.
However, the majority of programs will require the following:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal Statement
- Letters of Recommendation (1-3)

STEP 3: Review Pediatric EP Fellowship Program Availability Spreadsheet

Information regarding fellowship position availability is constantly updating over the course of the interview season.
- Programs give internal candidates their fellowship positions.
- Programs may get confirmation that they have funding for a fellowship position.
As such, the PACES-TPDs have created a spreadsheet that they try to update when possible with information about funded fellowship positions, contact info, and other helpful information about their programs.
Please see the following datasheet to find information about number of spots offered and number of positions filled by participating institutions. You will need a PACES account login to access this information. This can also be found under the "Career Resources" section of the PACES Website.

STEP 4: Contact individual program directors to inquire about EP fellowship spots available and required application materials

Most programs do NOT have guaranteed funding to train a Pediatric EP Fellow each year.
As such, some programs may not know whether they will have the funding to train a fellow until Spring or even early Summer the year prior to the anticipated training year.
Therefore, the number of programs offering fellowship positions will vary from year to year.

Send in the required application materials to the individual programs of interest with available fellowship spots.

STEP 5: Schedule Interviews

STEP 6: Be prepared for the Common Offer Notification Date

Offers for fellowship positions will only be made starting on the Common Offer Notification Date/Time.
At that time, institutions will offer their fellowship position to their top choice applicant. The institution cannot make any other offers until the applicant accepts or declines the offer OR 24 hours have passed without a response.
- This means that any given applicant may receive multiple offers if they were the top choice at multiple institutions.
- This also means that any given applicant may not receive any offers on the Common Offer Notification Date/Time if they were not the top choice at any institutions.
Applicants have 24 hours to accept or decline a fellowship offer. Once an applicant accepts a fellowship offer, the applicant is responsible for immediately declining any other offers received.
Be sure to read the terms of the Common Offer Notification Date Agreement so that you understand how the process will go on that day.

If you have any questions about the process itself, please reach out to any of the program directors you interviewed with for clarification.
Make sure you know how each program that you interviewed with will be making their offers (phone, email, etc.)
Make a list of the programs that you interviewed with in order of your preference so that you have that reference when receiving any offers on or after the Common Offer Notification Date.
NOTE: Not all Pediatric Fellowship training programs are participating in this agreement. Therefore, please confirm with each individual program regarding their application, offer, and acceptance process.

STEP 7: Know the Expectations for Applicant Responses to Offers

Applicants have 24 hours to accept or decline a fellowship offer.
Once an applicant accepts a fellowship offer, the applicant is responsible for immediately declining any other offers received, even if it is prior to 24 hours from receiving the offer.
This will allow the declined institutions to extend offers to another desired applicant.
Programs will continue to make offers until they have filled their spot or do not wish to make any further offers.
